Sophie Barrett-Brown

Senior Partner and Head of UK Practice

Sector: UK Immigration
Location: London

Sophie is Senior Partner and Head of the UK Practice of Laura Devine Solicitors (LDS) in London.

Recognised for many years by legal directories (including Chambers and Partners, Legal 500, The Who's Who of Corporate Immigration Lawyers and Super Lawyers) as a leading expert in UK immigration and nationality law, she has been described by directories as: 'a brilliant lawyer noted for her pragmatism and technical skills'; 'highly regarded for her business immigration expertise, particularly in relation to high net worth individuals. Sources agree she is an energetic powerhouse who gives very high-level advice; her knowledge of the points based system is second to none'.

Sophie specialises in all aspects of UK business immigration and nationality law as well as EU free movement law. She has particular expertise in the points based system, Tiers 1, 2, 4 and 5, including sponsored migrants, entrepreneurs and investors, as well as discretionary applications. Her clients are drawn from all sectors, including multinational corporations to SMEs, performance artists and high net worth individuals.

Sophie is recognised for her innovative outlook, which is used to 'lobby the Home Office with regards to changing policy', regularly participating in policy consultations and working parties. For example, the firm's submission to the Migration Advisory Committee's (MAC) call for evidence on investors was quoted by the MAC in its consequent report in 2014 more than any other contributor. She has on several occasions given evidence to the Home Affairs Select Committee (a parliamentary committee appointed by the House of Commons to examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the Home Office and its associated public bodies) on immigration.

Sophie is a prolific speaker and commentator on immigration law, presenting internationally and frequently commenting in the general media. She is a regular ILPA trainer and leads their course on Tier 1 Investors and Entrepreneurs and is recognised by directories for her "generosity in sharing her knowledge".

Sophie qualified as a lawyer in 1997. She has practised exclusively in immigration law since then, first at CMS Cameron McKenna before joining Laura Devine's team in January 2000, initially at Eversheds and from 2003 at LDS. Sophie held the position of Chair of ILPA from 2007 - 2012.
