Brexit extension and general election
30 October
Yesterday, the extension of the UK withdrawal date from the EU to 31 January 2020 became official. This extension allows the UK to leave before 31 January 2020, on the first day of any month, if by then a deal has been approved by the UK and EU.
Parliament also approved a bill yesterday for an early general election on 12 December 2019. This general election makes it highly unlikely that any deal for the UK to leave the EU will be agreed before current date of withdrawal on 31 January 2020.
These developments follow the votes by Parliament on 22 October 2019 to approve the EU (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill and defeat the accompanying programme motion to get all stages of the bill completed by 31 October 2019.
