Zeena Luchowa discusses immigration policy on Free Movement podcast

4 September 2026

Zeena Luchowa, Partner at Laura Devine Immigration, recently joined the Free Movement podcast to discuss her role as chair of the Law Society’s Immigration Law Committee and the Committee’s contribution to immigration policy debate.

In a wide-ranging discussion with host Jasmine Quiller-Doust, Zeena explored how the Law Society and its Immigration Law Committee engage with the Home Office, government, the media and practitioners to inform the development of immigration law and policy. The episode covers some of the most significant issues currently facing the sector, including the proposed Independent Immigration Appeals Authority, access to justice and the right to a fair hearing, the uncertainty created by earned settlement proposals, the increasing complexity and pace of immigration rule changes, and the growing hostility faced by immigration lawyers and the judiciary.

Reflecting on the importance of practitioner input in immigration policy development, Zeena said:

“Immigration is an area that requires dialogue, input and contribution, particularly from those of us on the ground who are seeing both the imminent and long-term impacts of proposed policy changes.”

The conversation also considers the Law Society’s concerns about the proposed new Independent Immigration Appeals Authority and the need to preserve fairness within the appeals system. Zeena emphasised:

“When we talk about the right to a fair hearing, it’s important to state that should not be something that is optional. It’s central to our justice system, especially for people that are fleeing danger or persecution.”

Zeena’s contribution to the podcast reflects the broader role that Laura Devine Immigration plays in shaping policy. Through engagement with consultations, stakeholder groups and professional bodies, LDI lawyers contribute practical insight from the front line of immigration law to help inform policy development and promote a fair, workable immigration system.
