Would an 'Australian-style' points-based immigration system work in the UK?
On Wednesday 30 October the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) and Laura Devine Immigration will be holding an event on how a points-based immigration system could work in the UK.
The new Prime Minister and Home Secretary have announced that they want the UK’s post-Brexit immigration policy to be based on an ‘Australian-style’ points-based system. The Home Office has commissioned the Migration Advisory Committee to explore the Australian model and other international comparators for examples of best practice.
But what does an ‘Australian-style’ points-based system mean in practice? To what extent should the new proposals build on or revise last year’s immigration white paper? And what lessons can be learnt internationally on the design of points-based systems?
This event will explore these questions with a range of leading experts at a critical juncture for the UK’s future immigration system.
Speakers:
- Kate Green MP, Chair, APPG on Migration
- Suella Braverman MP (invited)
- The Honourable George Brandis QC, High Commissioner for Australia, London
- Madeleine Sumption, Director, Migration Observatory
- Sophie Barrett-Brown, Senior Partner and Head of UK Practice, Laura Devine Immigration
- Chair: Marley Morris, Associate Director for Immigration, Trade and EU Relations, IPPR
