Prospective care workers face tough decisions when considering relocation to the UK
From 11 March 2024, migrant care workers will no longer be able to bring dependent partners and children to the UK.
This change comes as part of the government’s crackdown on net migration where the care industry has taken some big hits (see our recent post: ‘The spotlight is on sponsor carehomes and compliance – are you audit ready?’).
Now prospective care workers will face tough decisions when considering relocation to the UK. Industry experts have noted applicants already withdrawing from the recruitment process as a result of the anticipated change, which comes as little surprise given many individuals will wish to remain with their families.
The UK care system is already overstretched and under extreme pressure. The government has set out plans for recruiting more home-grown employees, but the details and effectiveness of such measurements are yet to be seen. The significance of potentially losing the lifeline of overseas care workers cannot be underestimated.
