HO inflammatory advice on women trafficked from Nigeria
2 July 2019
The Home Office has been heavily criticised for an official government document that states trafficked women from Nigeria can expect to return to the country “wealthy from prostitution” and “held in high regard”.
In an article for iNews Malini Skandachanmugarasan explains that the Home Office is “under a duty of care to all victims of trafficking, regardless of their country of origin. Any accounts provided by such individuals must be accurately documented and dealt with sensitivity to ensure that first and foremost, vulnerable people are provided with the required support and guidance. The Home Office policy guidance being referred to reflects a symptom of the current hostile environment policy whereby the Secretary of State is seen to be treating all affected victims with a general indifference rather than a considered approach on the basis of their individual traumatic experiences.”
