eVisa rollout commences

As eVisas are being issued, some users are experiencing difficulties

With the commencement of the eVisa rollout, individuals on eligible routes are beginning to receive invitations from the Home Office to set-up their UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account to access their eVisa.

The Home Office’s plan for a fully digital border by 2025 and wholly digital system through the eVisa rollout intends to render the border process more efficient, reduce the risk of tampering and put eVisa holders in control of their own data as well as enabling them to share their right to rent and work status more easily.

Nevertheless, some individuals have reported technical issues with setting up their eVisa. One individual who held a UKVI account under previous permission reported that their eVisa detailed the dates of their previous permission rather than their current permission and another individual reported being unable to link their eVisa to their account. Others have reported instances such that their eVisa contains another individual’s information meaning that they are unable to prove their status.

In oral evidence to the Justice and Home Affairs Committee on 12 March 2024, Monique Hawkins of the3million raised concerns about accessibility for digitally excluded people who may lack the digital literacy skills or the technological means to navigate the system. She also raised instances whereby bodies such as banks, employers and universities do not understand the validity of an eVisa when presented with it by the holder.

The Home Office is currently reviewing ways of improving accessibility and we would welcome further communications work with the relevant bodies to ensure the validity of eVisas are recognised.

It is important to take the necessary action by 31 December 2024, as otherwise you may encounter difficulties in travelling or proving your status after this date.
